The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
