European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
