Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
