Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in dispute included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
