Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
